StumbleUpon Traffic Blows

Published by Eli on Apr 25th, 2008. Filed under Traffic.

Just my thoughts and opinions here (I’ve experienced the StumbleUpon effect a few times).

The only way StumbleUpon traffic could be useful is if you got tens of thousands of visits from it, and you’re using a CPM ad network that pays you for the impressions, because:

  1. SU visitors only view one page per visit
  2. SU visitors do not click on AdSense (do not I say)
  3. SU can send so much traffic in so little time it will crash your host (put CPM ads all over!?)

I myself am also a Stumbler (sometimes) and when I stumble, I normally only view one page then close it, unless it’s a really interesting site/blog then I go and sign up/subscribe.

StumbleUpon Traffic

I get about 1.3 pageviews per visit from SU visitors, and they look at the page for 30 seconds on average, not very impressive in my opinion. If I get a large burst of traffic from SU my average pageviews per visit for the entire site drops quite dramatically, which I really hate seeing :)

Free traffic is free traffic! I’ve found that traffic from delicious isn’t much better either.

While it’s not good quality or sticky traffic, for someone running CPM based adverts on their site it can mean a revenue boost.

Providing your server can handle it :)

Maybe you could look at some creative ways to catch Stumbleupon users, detect them on the way in and try to tempt them to stay around with an offer or something.

Ie. put up a deviantart subscription competition, but only show it to SU visitors.
