Starting your own Web Directory is really easy!
Published by Eli on Aug 28th, 2007. Filed under Websites. If I’m saying it’s easy, then it really must be easy. I recently started JustAnotherDirectory, a free web directory running on phpLD, and so far it’s going pretty well. I’ve sold one featured link for $5 which was unexpected, and have also gotten a few clicks on the lone skyscraper on the right (not making my money back there). I have however created a new design for JAD, which should hopefully start making me some money!
Thus far in the directory there’s about 1300 active links, and 100 in the queue to be reviewed (I don’t accept gambling related and normally don’t accept medical related, or generally crappy websites). It’s received so many submissions because as soon as I started the site I submitted the directory to DirectoryCritic, and people do love free directories!
So, do you want to start your own web directory? It doesn’t take much, just try the following simply steps:
- Firstly, you want to get a domain, something catchy/meaningful preferably. Most people these days are just using lame, made-up words such as… keebles, or something like that. Maybe that’s available? Go for it.
- Secondly you need a web directory script. I’m pretty sure you can get a free one, or you can pay the $25 like I did and get a regular copy of the phpLD script. Try HotScripts if you’re looking for a free script.
- Lastly you want some traffic so that you can get some links submitted into your directory. Start by adding your directory to DirectoryCritic, and if it’s a free directory you’re submitting the links will roll in! You’ll also want to put a link to your site in your signatures on various webmaster forums, that will attract a few link-submitters.
I hope I’ve covered everything here.
Take it easy everyone, and good luck.
