Thought I would drop by and leave a post on the ole Blog! Here I’ve compiled a list of 5 good alternatives to Windows Live messenger – because I for one have been forced to use an alternative due to the newest Live messenger not working on my PC.
I’ve used a mix of Digsby and MSN messenger for a fair few months now, but after upgrading to the newest Windows Live messenger recently, and it dying after just one day of use, I have to just stick to my trusty Digsby program.

1. Digsby
Yep, Digsby is number one because I use it and I like it! Digsby is great because it’s compatible with pretty much every different messenger account (AIM, MSN, Yahoo!), and also works with social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter (don’t ask me how, I don’t use them).
I like Digsby for being a great alternative to MSN and also having good support for Twitter tweeting.
2. Trillian
I used to use Trillian a very long time ago, and I enjoyed it, but I always went back to MSN messenger (until it stopped working, that is). Trillian has been around for quite a while now, and has been updated and upgraded constantly over this time. I’m thinking of giving it another go!
It supports all of those differnet messengers such as MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, etc.
3. Pidgin
Pidgin is an instant messaging program for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes. You can talk to your friends using AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr.
Pidgin has a very minimalistic but sleek UI, and has great MSN support (even supports custom smilies). I also like Pidgin for IRC support.
4. Miranda
My brother used to use Mirdanda as an alternative to Live Messenger (stopped working, same as with mine), but now uses Trillian as his main weapon of choice. Miranda is truly a worthy alternative messenger program, especially after reading the about page.
5. aMSN
Yep, alternativeMSN! I used this for a few months, but doesn’t seem to be all that reliable. I wouldn’t recommend using this one over all of the other options above, but if nothing else works for you then maybe this will.
I wrote this because not too long ago I would do a Google search for alternatives to MSN messenger but wouldn’t find anything, so if you found this via Google or another search engine, I hope you found what you were looking for!
